“MISS DWELLS! MISS DWELLS WHERE ARE YOU?”

Strangely, Arlo found himself grinning. He would always try to laugh when he got nervous; it was one of his little quirky characteristics, laugh in the face of danger and stick your tongue out whilst concentrating. What would Achilles do now? he kept thinking.

The screaming had stopped from the students as they all paused for a breath, looking frantically behind them.

“Where is Achilles?” some of the students asked.

“He should be with us,” others said.

Friendly and slightly hesitant, Arlo answered, “Listen, he was right behind us, I’m sure he’s coming soon, we have to find Miss Dwells and the others.”

Arlo was trying hard to stay calm and collected but it was hard to do so with a group of people who moments ago never knew he existed. He could never be like Achilles. He was strong and brave, and everybody loved him and respected him, they listened to every word he said. Why would they listen to me?

He was snapped out of his thinking by a timid girl’s voice, “Arlo, why don’t we hide in one of the rooms?” Arlo turned to the voice, it was a small classmate called Lyssa, who had deep brown eyes and a mane of brown hair to suit, “I don’t hear anything, it’s gone all quiet, maybe we can hide in one of the training rooms until those things go away?”

Arlo’s eyes sparked up, “Yes! That’s a great idea, are they locked?”

Foster, another student similar in build to Achilles stepped forward, “Let’s just go and kick some doors down shall we, Arlo?”

He knows my name! Arlo grinned inside, “Yeah ok, sounds good, let’s go.”

Lyssa threw her massive mane of brown hair behind her head, “Ok, you’re in charge now, tell us where to go.”

Stepping confidently into Lyssa’s view, Arlo mustered up an encouraging grin. There’re listening to me. Arlo’s eyes focused solely on Lyssa, “Ok, let’s go to the conference rooms, it’s probably safer there anyway.”

“Hasn’t the captain got a room somewhere? I swear I saw something about it on the guidelines when we came in.” asked Foster.

“Yes Foster, yes of course the captain’s base! Why didn’t I think of that before?” Arlo said it out loud this time.

“What about Achilles?” Lyssa asked.

“Once we get to safety, hopefully he will catch up with us, we won’t leave anybody behind.”

“You sound like you’re in charge,” Foster said.

“That’s because I am,” Arlo replied quicker than he thought.

With everybody on board, the new group ran down more corridors and around more of the zoo’s displays with the creatures inside the cages unaware of the students’ plight.

As they passed the creature exhibits and headed towards conference rooms, Arlo led the way and made sure to glance his neck back and check behind the students as they ran. The group span around yet another corner at speed.

“We’ve been running for ages. Do you know how to get there?” Lyssa’s voice was sounding more frantic and Arlo knew. He was looking more flustered and was unable to control the panic which had now claimed almost all of his classmates.
